Al-Mutanabbi Book - What’s been Lost.. What Remains
An index of books destroyed through natural and unnatural means through recorded time. This book is in the shape of a hand grenade, the image of which I found in a catalogue from the 1994 exhibition of Islamic books: Pages of Perfection, which was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The vessels portrayed in a scientific manuscript from the 1600’s showed brightly colored containers for GREEK FIRE, essentially petroleum, and were prototypes for incendiary devices. The bombing of the bookseller’s street, Al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad in 2007 was an act of violence against all people who love books and words. The international project that this book was made for is traveling to many cities around the world and is currently at the Center for Book Arts in New York City, and in Manchester England.
