The Birds and the Bees

Nave Annex Gallery, Somerville, MA — Spring 2015

The buzz of bees, the chirping of birds, vibrantly colored flowers, and green tender shoots pushing up from barren ground are dreamed of promises during these cold winter months, rest assured, spring will come again, and with it:

POLLINATION!

Brush up on bee lore, botanical illustration, nest building techniques, avian husbandry, and honey hunting or ornithological sleights of hand. What it might all mean? Waggle dances? Colony Collapse disorder?

But then again —

Maybe it’s all just about LOVE SWEET LOVE!

Blurb for Open call for Birds and Bees exhibition:

Once again Susan Berstler asked me if I had an idea for a show because a slot had opened in their program for the spring.  She had known of my work around bees and pollinators and I had been eager to try something with both birds AND bees, and however people might spin those ideas. Susan is the Heart and Brains and so much else behind the Nave Gallery on Powder House Blvd. in Somerville, and for 5 years  (2013-2018) was the same, along with Tori Costa for the NAVE ANNEX, which at 53 Chester St was right next door to the very well known REDBONES restaurant in the middle of Davis Sq. The Nave Annex was known for showing interestingly themed shows where work could be seen that was created by local, national and international artists. Susan is a generous and open-minded person who believes in giving people opportunities to make art visible in unexpected places and in unexpected ways.  I am grateful for the ideas she encouraged me to make into shows at the Annex, and it’s vibrancy in sorely missed.
